Sloping land can be retained with a battered wall. Stone pitching provides an economical solution.
If the sloping land in question is of a gravel or clay type it will need to be removed and 150 mm of yellow sand placed in situ. The rock will be graded by size eg 100 0r 200 mm. Half of the stone goes into the sand so take into account the depth needed for the sand.
The skill is in using nothing more than your eyes to get the flatness and even gaps. A rubber mallet, grout bag and a gardening trowel are handy too. The grading of the rock is an important factor also.
This is a cement only mix due to the oxide colour. A grout bag is the easiest way to get the mortar into the gap. The paint brush just flattens down the mortar to the edge of the rock face. The square edge of the largest small tool is then used to polish a consistent wide line.
